Guaranteeing Health Care for Every American
Medicine is able to extend life, improve the quality of life and save lives that, even a few years ago, wouldn’t have had a chance.
One of the biggest challenges we face as a nation is combating the cost of health care. “Private and public spending on health care in America now totals more than 15 percent of our gross domestic product.” The result of the rising cost of medical care? More than 45 million Americans (17 percent of the population) are without health insurance. Too young for Medicare and earning too much for Medicaid, these Americans struggle to pay hospital and doctor’s bills. And it’s a myth that these uninsured people are slackers who refuse to work: “four out of five of the uninsured work or belong to families in which a member works.”
It’s obvious that we need a health care system that does the following:
Protects each and every American citizen.
Pays for all significant medical expenses.
Offers Americans a choice among doctors.
Improves care for minorities so that it is equal with care provided to non-minorities.
Provides “incentives for the most effective treatments, and disincentives for costly and unnecessary ones.”
Emphasizes preventive medicine (healthy eating, exercise, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, etc.).
Restrains the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs.
Makes “administrative record-keeping more efficient and less costly.”
Assists businesses that are providing health insurance for their employees.
